MERINO-POSSUM GARMENT CARE

MERINO-POSSUM WASHING INSTRUCTIONS

If your Merino-Possum beanie gets wet in the rain, just give it a shake and hang it up to dry away from direct heat where air can circulate.. Our Merino-Possum is the only gear we sell that requires handwashing*. Again, Dri-Pak Liquid Soap Flakes brings it up a treat, or try  NikWax Woolwash or Ecover for Delicates.

However, when handwashing it::

  •     Always use water no hotter than 30o. If the water feels warm to the touch, it's too hot.
  •     Do NOT rub. Simply swish the item(s) around gently in the water.
  •     Rinse in water no hotter than 30o
  •     Do NOT wring. Wrap in a clean dry towel and press gently.
  •     Give the item(s) a good shake to fluff them up and hang up to dry away from direct heat     and where air can circulate.
  •     Do NOT dry clean

*OK - the care label advises hand-washing. This is because of the wide variety of washing-machine types out there. We have found that if you use a front-loading tumble action washing machine, not a top loading machine with agitator, on the correct wool/delicates cycle, with a liquid detergent for wool, and line or hang to dry where air can circulate. our merino-possum stuff comes out fine. However if you haven't got a front-loader, or are in any doubt, then hand-washing is the only option.

Enemies of your Merino-Possum!

Apart from not being washed properly, Merino-Possum gear, like Merino, has two other enemies:

  •     Sharp pointy things that can snag the fabric causing holes and runs.
  •     Moths
  •     Pets, i.e. cats and dogs - some of them love burrowing and chewing it!

Moths, can be defeated by regular wearing. If you need to stash your merino-possum away for any length of time, we suggest using vacuum compression bags. Try these from from PackMate. For more information on moths and how to avoid them click here

Pets can develop a strange attraction to merino-possum. One of our cats spends hours pawing and kneading at a merino-possum throw we have on the bed! And our dog Rog, when a pup, chewed a hole in my Merino-Possum beanie!

Mending your Merino-Possum

If you are unlucky enough to snag or tear your merino-possum (or have it chewed by a pup) or be attacked by moths, all is not lost. It can be mended, again like Superfine Merino, using silk sewing thread. We like Gutermann Silk which you can buy on-line here or Seta Reale from Coates. How invisible a mend this will be depends on the size of the hole and your own skill, but it does work.
