70 Mile Bush Taihape socks are made for active, hard-working and hard-playing people who live life on their feet, every pair of 70 Mile Bush socks has been designed and engineered for maximum comfort and knitted in the Norsewood Mill from the finest natural fibres for excellent durability.

Made from New Zealand merino wool, this range of hiking socks is well-cushioned making them ideal for extended treks. Merino's legendary wicking qualities ensure that feet stay dry whilst the nylon reinforcing gives durability and resistance to abrasion. Generously cushioned in the key areas of heel, toe and sole, and with lycra to ensure a secure fit. In washing tests alongside their competitors, these were the only brand not to shrink appreciably on a 40 degree wool wash.

Reviews

Gear expert Pete Macfarlane trialled these for us. These are his comments - and the reasons why we brought them in!

Taihape Mountain and Taihape Fell are good winter socks. The toes are good with nice flat seams. Both have the chunky knitted look of Canada Wigwam, Thorlo Mountaineering, and Extremities Mountain Toesters. Trail are more a low profile all-rounder which we're all using these days.

Taihape Mountain

The Taihape Mountain's are big and badass! This sock hits all the bases for a great mountain sock. These are for lining your winter boots, or wearing inside your wellies while you're making a snowman or fishing. Like the other models they have old-school home-made looks, but the finish is fine, the toes have low profile seams and they're a good length to match my ¾length merino leggings. Very well padded, so good for inside rigger and steel toe-capped boots too, but that's for when they get a little worn out, that padding will be repelling crampon straps first. Due to it's thickness you may need a boot a half size bigger than you normally wear.

Taihape Fell

A lighter weight sock than the Mountain, the Taihape Fell makes a great trekking sock for most conditions. The Taihape Fell's are what you'd call a traditional hillwalking sock, still thick, but not like the Taihape Mountain's loft insulation style! The same good toe is here, good length, good padding. These have had the most use so far, a nice GI outdoor sock.

Taihape Trail

The lightest of this high-content merino sock range. A good all-round sock for both trail and everyday use. The Taihape Trail made a good summer sock and has been around Assynt most recently. It's also a good sock for the daily sock drawer, these have been in my Vans and Converse as much anything.

Regular customer Bill Griffiths wrote to us to say:

In early October [2010] I walked the 100 mile trail on the South Downs from Winchester to Eastbourne during which time I wore these new socks [70 Mile Bush Taihape Fell socks.] for 3 consecutive days. They were very comfortable throughout the walk, kept my feet cosy and the terry loop knit in the soles functioned particularly well . The pile maintained it's loft and the socks remained in place with no noticeable slippage. When I took the socks out of my pack a week later they did not smell!!! What more could one ask for from a pair of socks. Here's to the next trek.
